Female circumcision
Female genital cutting is an issue in Switzerland too. It is estimated that around 22,000 girls and women in Switzerland are affected or threatened by female genital mutilation.
Many of those affected suffer from the physical and psychological consequences of having their genitals mutilated for the rest of their lives. Midwives, doctors, and social authorities do not always have enough specific expertise to provide them with the necessary medical, psychological, and legal help.
Female genital mutilation is a criminal offence in Switzerland. But preventing female genital mutilation requires more than just a ban. Caritas advises not only those affected, but also specialists, carries out prevention work in the communities, sensitises specialists and sets up regional contact points on the topic of female genital mutilation.
Network against Female Genital Cutting
Together with Sexual Health Switzerland and the Swiss Centre of Expertise in Human Rights, Caritas Switzerland has formed the Swiss Network against Female Genital Mutilation. The aim is to ensure the protection and care of vulnerable and affected girls and women throughout the country.
Community work
Both male and female Multiplier workers mediate between the affected communities, counselling centres andspecialists. They are very important for prevention because they encourage the affected communities not only to discuss the taboo subject of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) but also critically to question this tradition and practice.
Counselling and information
Caritas Switzerland counsels directly affected persons, specialists, and institutions on the topic of female genital mutilation. It provides background information and, if necessary, refers those seeking help to other specialists (e.g. midwives and obstetricians, gynaecologists, etc.).

Jahresbericht 2022 des Netzwerks gegen Mädchenbeschneidung Schweiz
Auch 2022 hat sich das Netzwerk gegen Mädchenbeschneidung Schweiz mit viel Engagement für Frauen und Mädchen eingesetzt, die von weiblicher Genitalbeschneidung bedroht oder betroffen sind. Über hundert Anfragen von Betroffenen und Fachpersonen wurden entgegengenommen, Fachleute aus dem Sozial-, Gesundheits- und Justizbereich geschult. Zudem gelang es, in verschiedenen Regionen der Schweiz Angebote zur medizinischen und psychosozialen Versorgung auf- oder auszubauen, etwa in den Kantonen Zürich oder Tessin.

Prävention von Mädchenbeschneidung - Empfehlungen zur Community Arbeit in der Schweiz
Leiden alle beschnittenen Frauen? Wie helfen wir ihnen am besten? Eine vermeintlich simple Frage erfordert eine differenzierte Betrachtung, damit den Betroffenen wirklich geholfen wird. Sie einfach in die Opferrolle zu drängen, ist der falsche Weg. Dr. Fana Asefaw, Ärztin und Autorin eines Buches über weibliche Genitalbeschneidung, richtet an die Fachpersonen in der Schweiz den eindringlichen Appell, die Betroffenen von weiblicher Beschneidung nicht generell als Traumatisierte zu betrachten.
